401. Anti-religion agenda among social media users

Frankus,

Chretein and Martin are both Catholics and they both support same sex marriage.

How deep or convincing is a faith that you are willing to live by only if it accords with reason?

That depends on what you mean by "faith". I realize religious moderates don't define "faith" as "believing without evidence", but rather something like "make the best judgement based on evidence and leave the rest to God". So in practice it is not so different from what a rational atheist would do except for the psychological clutch (not all atheists are rational.Example: DP)

Well I think politicians' religious belief should be their own business unless it intrudes into politics.

We shouldn't be doing witch hunt about Obama's religion, I thought only the Christian Right do that (for different reasons, of course)

Do you know how close the popular votes were? It was 51% for Obama and 48% for McCain.

This, despite Obama's charisma, his sensible program, his well organized machine to get the votes out and unprecedented amount of money. On the other side was an old, tired, fumbling Republican candidate without a vision and Sarah Palin. That after 8 years of Bush and the Wall street melt down.

Obama could have easily lost if, say, Sarah Palin spent a few more hours preparing before she met the media and appeared less incompetent.

Don't let Obama's landslide victory on election night fool you. This was not possible without the electorial college system, which is actually deeply undemocratic. A historical number of people came out to vote for Obama, but an unprecedented number also came out to make sure that the black man, the "socialist" would never get elected, they lost only by 3%. The U.S. is still a deeply conservative country. It has not been transformed, not yet. It is still very scary.

So I completely understand why Obama had to get moderate religious votes. But you want him to sound like Dawkins. Dawkins himself said that he is no politician, I am sure he can understand why a politician would need to sound like one.

EDIT: I read the entire speech. You need to parse it carefully to seperate the content from the rhetorics. In substance it is a speech in favour of secularism. He paid some non denominational, symbolic tributes to religion. Big deal.

Havent seen his views. But the idea of card game with made up rules isnt too far away from how I see it.
I do believe that capitalism does provide a basis for a workable economic system though. So I dont see it as totally artificial.

I was talking about the myth of "wealth creation".

The bulk of economical activities consist of circulation of wealth, not by creating new wealth.

With our current technology, we are quite capable of providing a decent living standard for everyone on the planet.

Take food, for example. There is no food shortage, instead we overproduce. Starvation occurs because the poor cannot afford the price.

Depression and recession happen not because of scarcity, but because there is low demand. Goods get piled up without customers (speaking of which I am waiting for a recession sale to go on a shopping spree)

What is wealth? Technology, production facilities, natural resources, good public infrastructures, etc. We have plenty of those already.

Capitalist "wealth creation" is often a process of generating unnecessary waste in order to keep the circulation of purchasing power in perpetual motion. It is a very destructive and irrational way of wealth distribution.

The problem is in Capitalism you cannot attain a stable equilibrium, a state where one is content with what he has and devote his life to more meaningful persuits.

Instead we are tied to the treadmill of growth or perish. To generate "growth" we have to keep on raping the planet, depleting our resources and poisoning our environment as if there is no tomorrow to create more "wealth".

I read an article years ago that our steel manufacturing technology today is so good that they can make razors that last a lifetime. As a result razor manufacturers such as Gillet have to temper the steel with impurities to make sure that their products wear out quickly.
If no one throw away old stuffs to buy new ones, even though the old stuffs are still in good working order, we will be in a deep recession. This is the insanity of capitalism.

Capitalism appears to be "efficient" because the true costs are not factored into the price. When factorise dump toxic waste and generate green house gas, the costs are "externalized". It will come back to bite us in the ass, but hey, it looks good on the balance book. The capitalist doesn't know anything about value, he only knows price. Whatever he cannot affix a price tag to or turn a profit out of, he thinks it is worthless.

We are extremely lucky to be alive, to find ourselves in this beautiful, hospitable planet with an abundance of resources for us to use wisely. It would be very sad if we ruin it all because of our own greed and short sightedness. Those who are unwilling to take steps to address the urgent problem of global warming and other environmental concerns always use the same excuse: the economy. Well if we keep up this insanity there will come a day when there won't be any economy to worry about.

Comment #280531 by Bonzai on November 7, 2008 at 5:35 pm

"If God does not exist, everything is permitted."

The source of that might have been Jean Paul Satre

http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/features/2000/cortesi1.html

An interesting interpretation is found here

http://www.freeratio.org/vbb/archive/index.php/t-145063.html

Of course everything is permissible: If someone wants to hunt down people who kill others, who molest children, who commit atrocities, and kill them or imprison them, he can do that too.

Of course everything is permissible: If someone wants to enslave his will to that of another, living or dead, and call that self-enslavement loyalty or dedication to God, he can do that as well.

The message, "If God does not exist, then everything is permitted," is a message not of comfort, but of freedom: We are free to do as we please. It is also a message of responsibility: If we are to have what we want, it is we ourselves who must make it happen. If we want to have a society free of murder, we cannot count on a god to make it so; we must ourselves choose to hunt down murderers and imprison them. We cannot rely the justice of a god, we must create our own justice. We cannot count on either the fear or support of a god, we must count on the fear and support of each other. And we cannot count on a god to tell us what is right or wrong. We have to create right and wrong ourselves.

Yes, if a god does not exist, then everything is "permitted". But only that which each person permits himself, and what we permit each other.

Check out wealth distribution over the past 30 years if in doubt. The rich have been getting richer and the poor poorer. Middle class is where it was 30 years ago.

Don't waste your breath.

DP would say this is perfectly reasonable. The market rewards the hard working, the smart and punishes the lazy, the stupid and those who make "bad decisions", as it should.

For capitalist fundamentalists like DP the market is not a tool to serve us, it is a moral agent to keep us in line, a God who rules over us.

"Spreading the wealth" and "redistribution" subverts what the market ordains. It is blasphemy.

It also stands to reason that minimum wage workers on the Idaho border would be attracted to the market that can pay more. Idaho border towns now also face a smaller supply of minimum wage workers and see an increase in wages. It does not make sense to use a large minimum wage increase in Washington as evidence that it will not affect jobs in Idaho.

I think "boder town" are the key words. When there is no uniform standard across states, business at the border would take advantage of cheap labour and sell to the same market.

That's why "globalization" without uniform labour standard is bad news for workers.

Comment #280398 by Gregg Townsend on November 7, 2008 at 12:51 pm

That is a strange article with a curious thesis.

Its claim is not that busineses are hiring less people because of rising labour cost. But rather, older, less skilled workers with entry level jobs are being displaced by younger, more skilled ones. The author claimed this happened because entry level jobs became more attractive to the skilled workers as a result of a raise in minimum wage. While a younger, more skilled work force became available, employers would hire them to get more bang out of the buck.

It seems a rather torturous argument to me.

I expect business always would hire the best employees availiable. The fact that suddenly you have higher skilled, younger people flooding the market who otherwise would be in school or aimimg for better jobs indicates a larger problem. Perhaps those jobs that require higher skills have disappeared as a result of economical downturn or restructuring? Or maybe tuition is too high so young people can't afford to stay in school? How could the author pinpoint minimum wage as the culprit without looking at other factors?

I don't think a sensible person would suddenly give up college or a good co-op program to get a minimum waged, dead end job simply because he can make 50cents to a dollar more an hour than before. It doesn't make sense.

Edited for clarity

Total spending power in the economy will not be affected by whose hands the money is in.

But it will affect how the money is spent and how it circulates. Rich people may spend their money overseas or on luxurious imported good. They also save more and may have overseas investments. On the other hand, Poorer folks spend most of their pay checques locally.

I have read some studies along the line, many are churned out by rightwing think tanks and are quite easily debunk.

McDonald's hires x number of students with minimum wage because they need X number of bodies to handle customers. If the number of customers don't change, even with a raise in minimum wage they will still need x employees. Otherwise there will be long line ups and pissed off customers and they will go elsewhere.

Typical conservative dummy. Penny wise but dollar stupid. That's why you are sitting here arguing with socialists instead of actually making money.

Companies hire people because there is demand. Without demand they wouldn't hire anyone even if there is zero tax and they can get away with paying $2 an hour.

More money in the pockets of the workers means more demand and hence more business. Not so well to do people tend to spend instead of hording their money in overseas investment portfolio, that means more consumers and more profits for businesses.

Obama cannot be clearer on where he stands: faith is private and should remain there.

One thing all phobias are about is the fear of loss of control (whether at the sight of spiders or in an aircraft that is piloted by someone else).

They would probably be a lot happier if they just went for one or two simple phobias (and avoided the relevant stimulus wherever possible) like the vast majority of us who are sensibly a little crazy. Instead they seem frightened of the whole world.

Some researchers claim that political leanings may be partly genetic and right wingers tend to be more fearful people than liberals. Now who is the wuss, eh?

People who scored highly on a scale measuring fear of death, for example, were almost four times more likely to hold conservative views. Dogmatic types were also more conservative, while those who expressed interest in new experiences tended to be liberals. Jost's review also noted research showing that conservatives prefer simple and unambiguous paintings, poems and songs.

I don't know why we should care. As long as his politics is secular, it is none of our business to inquire into his private beliefs. From what he said about the role of religion in politics (which is nil) I am completely happy.

The political justification for the atheist "movement" is that religion rudely intrudes into secular life. Now the U.S. President elected says in uncertain terms that political and moral positions must be justified in secular terms, accessible to citizens of all faiths and no faith, what more can we ask for?

Yes, in fact, it does make enough of a difference. Especially if black turnout was, say, double the number from the last general election. Reread my post #279722 and redo the math. Use a calculator as necessary.

Sorry, I think your analysis is problematic. If Obama couldn't bring out the black votes, he probably would fail in bringing out Democratic votes in other demographic groups as well. The vote turned out to be close. I think it is reasonable to think that the vast majority of those who voted against prop 8 also voted for Obama.

Now unless you think Rebupublcian supporters would vote against Prop 8, the alternative scenario would be Obama lost California and prop 8 got passed.

So, while Obama perhaps could have taken a stronger stance against prop8 (he did say he opposes it) It is far fetched to try to blame him for bringing out the black voters.

I think al's argument is that the voters have neglected Al-Quaeda's reaction in electing Obama. He is saying that they should, from what I can tell from his posts.

I don't think that is much of an argument. For if they do, one can argue that democracy shouldn't be taken hostage by terrorists.

Now the only reason why Obama is seen to be "soft" on terrorists is because he argues for leaving Iraq. I think that is a pragmatic stance as the war is bleeding the U.S. dry and there has never been a good reason to be there anyway. The only argument to continue with the occupation, as far as I can see, is a moral one. Namely, like your mother might have told you, you own whatever you break. So the U.S. has to commit to an unwinnable situation even for 100 years, as McCain famously said. Though I don't think McCain was thinking in terms of the U.S. making penance.

Absolutely. It is an unfortunate thing, but the far-left (and by extension the Democrats that pander to them) have what I can only describe as utter contempt for the military.

I have not seen any evidence that Obama is contemptous of the military. Indeed many on the left, not just "the far left" are disappointed that he wants to expand the war in Afghanistan and probably to Pakistan. Now our leftist party the NDP wants to withdraw from Afghanistan (which I disagree), I heard that they are now worried because Obama may request us to stay and it would be so much more difficult to say no because of his immense popularity in Canada and among many NDP supporters.

Judging by his words Obama is very much as militaristic as McCain, though with a different emphasis.

I am not saying whether it is good or bad, just pointing out your misconceptions about Obama and "the far left".

I heard you are trying to get a job with the FBI, good luck.
